Hella Holland = muzikaal travestie cabaret in de traditie van Ella Fitzgerald, Brel en Van Kooten en De Bie. Een vocaal jazzconcert, met literaire pretenties en wilde pop-uitstapjes! Deze vrouwenrol van Ron Mesland ontstond onder regie van Hetty Blok.
Hella Holland (1922), dichteres en jazzdiva, forceert graag een intieme sfeer. Geruchten dat ze een man zou zijn noemt ze irrelevant. Ze zingt met robuuste bariton jazz-, opera- en pop- standards in zeer persoonlijke, Nederlandstalige bewerking. Ze beroert de piano en draagt gedichten voor uit haar omstreden dichtbundel Vlees Mevrouw (1968). Intussen babbelt ze met begeleiders en publiek over wat haar op dat specifieke moment bezighoudt.
Het repertoire omvat evergreens uit alle mogelijke sferen, onsterfelijk als Hella zelf. Van Peggy Lee tot Verdi, van Billie Holiday tot The Who.
Een enkele maal laat Hella zich in het openbaar bewonderen op intieme podia. Met name rond de feestdagen, hoewel ze beweert absoluut niet eenzaam te zijn. Ook wie haar inhuurt heeft snel door dat het bij Hella niet om ijdele en kleine gevoelens gaat, maar om de kunst. Wellicht is daarom het Holland festival naar haar genoemd.
Hella en haar combo zijn conservatorium-geschoold. Alles wordt liefst onversterkt gespeeld en gezongen. Hella Holland staat garant voor een ontspannen, hilarisch en bijzonder cabaretconcert.
Favoriete line-up: Hella met pianist/contrabassist Wilbert Friederichs (als Bessie) en gitarist Steef Vellinga.

Hella Holland = musical cabaret in drag in the tradition of Ella, Brel and Dutch 70ies tv stars.
A vocal jazzconcert with literary pretensions and wild pop infusions. This role by Ron Mesland was originally directed by Dutch actress Hetty Blok.
Hella Holland (1922), poetress and jazzdiva, likes to force an intimate atmosphere. She dismisses rumors that she is a man as irrelevant. With her subtle Baritone voice she tackles virtually every genre, from jazz and pop to classical, in her own Dutch translation. Directing her ensemble from the piano she likes to bestow light (but always deeply felt) poetry on her audience, while chatting with her accompanists about politics, flowers or whatever is on her mind at that specific moment.
The repertory consists of evergreens, immortal like herself.
Brubeck’s Take Five (Neem er 5), Verdi’s ‘Stride la Vampa’ (Ziedende vlammen), Billie Holiday’s complete works, the Who’s ‘My generation’, you name it.
Occasionally Hella can be admired in public, often in the winter Holidays, although she denies being lonely. For any spectator it is soon obvious that it’s never about small and idle feelings, for her it’s all about Art. That may be the main reason why the Holland Festival is named after her.
Hella and her group are conservatory schooled musicians and play and sing acoustically if possible. Hella Holland guarantees a relaxed, at times hilarious and remarkable cabaret-concert. Favorite line-up: Hella with pianist/bassplayer Wilbert Friederichs (as Bessie Zoetenkaas) and guitarist Steef Vellinga.
